Good evening dear friends!

I had a different post planned for today, but my dear Amanda, from Poppies and Ice cream, nominated me for a Liebster Award meme, and I thought it would be fun to use it as a opportunity to share some random facts about me that you may not know. If you are not familiar with memes, the idea is that I have to share some random facts about me and answer some questions, and then pass it to someone else, so that we get to know more about the persons we interact with in the blogosphere.

So here go 15 random facts about me, followed by my replies to Amanda’s questions:

1- My mum is the best party planner I know and she is capable of transforming a room with paper and scissors. She always gave us the best parties and we always looked forward to our birthdays. In the picture at the beginning of this post you can see some of the pictures from my bunny 1st year old birthday, my “Dutch girl” 3rd year old, my “princess” 5 year old party, as well as the party were we had magicians and  a troubadour.

2- I didn’t have a 6 year old birthday party because I was grounded and lost my right to it. I used to throw HUGE tantrums for no reason and I was, frankly speaking, quite impossible, so my parents took away the one thing I loved the most: my birthday party. It worked, that was the last tantrum I ever had.

3- I never thought about myself as someone creative.  It still surprises that I now have so many hobbies that imply me doing something with my hands!

4- I was always a nerd, and a bookworm. Libraries make my eyes tingle. My dream would be to have the one from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, or at least to be allowed to go read there as often as I want to.

5- This one is related to fact#4: I have no idea what professors mean when they talk about “suggested or recommended reading”. I am an obsessive student and need to know EVERYTHING to feel safe at the time of an exam. So anything that is “suggested” (or sometimes even just mentioned) ends up in the  reading list.  That’s why, for example, I read 32 books  while studying Jurisprudence and Legal Theory (during my LL.M) even if the compulsory reading included just 1.  (I’m glad I did).

6) I love to sing but I’m tone deaf. So I sing in the shower, like Fabio Armiliato’s character  in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love

7) When I was 17 years old, my best friend and I buried a time capsule in the backyard of our country side home. We retrieved it and opened it 6 years later (the picture below shows us with the contents of the box on the day. We were drying them because we hadn’t sealed the box properly and they were wet).

 

 

8) I have a freakishly good memory for unimportant things, such as dates when things happened. I can easily remember what I did on September 7th 1992, for example (I went to a party at my friend Melina’s house. See, I told you).

9) I lived 2 1/2 years in Ivory Coast and those years changed my life completely. In the picture below, you can see me in the Comoé region, next to a cocoa tree

10) I am an originally blonde turned bottle brunette because I have white hair 😉

 11) I have a travelling troll, just like the garden dwarf from Amélie. He has been with me since January 1994 (I told you I was good with dates) and has traveled with me all over the World.  The picture below is from the times I lived Ivory Coast. My team and I were having breakfast at a café in Bouaké, and I took a picture of the Troll on the UN Prado. I guess we can say that he was a UN Peacekeeping Troll for a while.

12) I learn languages easily. That’s probably my best talent.

13) I love Opera and have been known for tearing up when listening to it. Such an Italian cliché, I know, but I can’t deny my blood 😉

14) My husband and I met in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on the day I arrived. We started dating 1 week after my arrival and got engaged 1 month after that. The picture below is our first one together.

 

15) My husband and I got married in Florence, Italy, 5 1/2 months after the day we met. It was the happiest day of my life. I wore a black suit and a hat.

 

 

Now here are my answers to Amanda’s questions:

1-If you could live anywhere, where would that be?

Hmm, this is a difficult one, because I would like to live in many places and experience living in different cultures…but if I had to settle somewhere, I would probably chose Florence, Italy (Firenze). It’s my favorite city in the World (well, the parts of the World that I know)

2- Given the chance, which magic power would you choose?

Healing, the body, the mind and the soul. Healing broken relationships, ill sentiments, bringing peace where there is war, bringing smiles where there are tears, bringing hope to those who have lost it.

3- If the genie-of-the-lamp appeared to you, what would you ask?

The magic power above. And a Canon 5D Mark III with a couple of lenses 😉

4- Do you recommend any books?

Yes! Just off the top of my head:

-One hundred years of solitude, by Gabriel García Marquez,

-Rayuela (Hopscotch), by Julio Cortazar

– Everything by Milan Kundera

– Anything by Krishnamurti

– A long walk to freedom (Nelson Mandela’s autobiography)

– A lucky child (the memoir of Judge Buergenthal’s surviving Auschwitz)

– The books by Ahmadou Kourouma on the conflict in Ivory Coast: Allah n’est pas obligé, Quand on refuse on dit non, les soleils des indépendances.

– Closed doors (Huis clos) by Jean Paul Sartre (I had an existentialist phase when I was 14. I used to dress all in black and read Sartre, Camus and de Beauvoir. Ah, the teenage years…)

5- What made you start blogging?

I wanted to share the things I was learning with my family and friends. To my delight, this community grew and I found people reading my ramblings that I didn’t know before. Thank you all for being there!

6- What is making you happy right now?

Lots of things, little things: my kids laughter, my husband’s hugs, the sunny day outside my window, a nice cup of tea, the yellow gerberas  that I bought yesterday at the market and that are gracing my living room, beautiful music, new friends, new projects, new beginnings. I believe happiness is in the small things.

7- What is your favorite food?

I don’t know if I have a favorite food,  I like different things at different times. But my Italian heritage dictates that I’m always in the mood for pasta!

8- Favorite fairy-tale?

Beauty and the Beast.

9- Are you a nomad or do you feel bound to your “roots”?

A nomad, definitely.

10- The best place you’ve ever visited?

What do you mean by best? My favorite city is Florence, because it breathes art and it’s perfect 🙂

11- Happiest memory from childhood?

I can’t remember…probably the day my brother was born. I was so excited to have a little brother!

Buenas noches queridos amigos!

Tenía otro post planificado para hoy, pero mi querida Amanda, de Poppies and Ice cream me nominó para un meme llamado Liebster Award y me pareció que sería divertido usarlo como una oportunidad para compartir con ustedes alguna información acerca de mí que posiblemente no conozcan.  Por si no estan familiarizados con el mundo de los blogs,  les cuento que una meme es un “premio” en virtud del cual tengo que contarles cosas acerca de mí,  responder algunas preguntas, y luego pasarselo a otros bloggers que leo para que podamos conocernos mejor.

Así que aquí tienen 13 datos acerca de mí, seguidos de mis respuestas a las preguntas de Amanda:

1- Mi mamá es la mejor organizadora de eventos que conozco y alguien capaz de transformar cualquier ambiente sólo con papel y tijeras.  Siempre nos organizó fiestas fantasticas y nosotros (mi hermano y yo) adorábamos nuestros cumpleaños. La foto del comienzo de este post es un collage de algunas de esas fiestas: mi fiesta de conejitos (1er cumpleaños), mi tercer cumpleaños de “Holandesa”, mis 5 años de “princesa”, así como el mago y el trovador que animaron otras de nuestras fiestas.

2- A los 6 años me quedé sin fiesta de cumpleaños porque estaba en penitencia. En esa epoca yo hacía unos berrinches de padre y señor mío y era, francamente hablando, bastante insoportable, así que mis padres me quitaron lo que yo más quería: mi fiesta de cumpleaños. Funcionó, ese fue mi último berrinche.

3- Nunca me concebí como alguien creativo, y aún sigo sorprendida de tener tantos hobbies que requieren que haga cosas con mis manos (la sorpresa de tener este blog, ni les cuento!)

4- Siempre fui una nerd (en Argentina decimos traga, por traga libros, pero no sé en otros paises) y una rata de biblioteca. Veo una biblioteca y mis ojos se llenan de estrellitas. Mi sueño sería tener una biblioteca como la de la película de Disney  “La Bella y la Bestia”, o al menos que me permitieran leer allí las veces que yo quiera.

5- Este punto está relacionado con el anterior: No tengo la más remota idea qué se supone que sean las “lecturas sugeridas o recomendadas”por los profesores, yo entiendo todo como obligatorio. Soy de esas estudiantes obsesivas que necesita saber TODO para sentirse segura en un examen. Todo lo “sugerido” termina  en la lista de libros “a leer sí o sí”. A causa de esto terminé leyendo 32 libros al estudiar Filosofía del derecho (para una maestría) y no sólo uno (el único obligatorio).

6- Amo cantar pero tengo cero oido para la musica. Por eso canto bajo la ducha, como el personaje de Fabio Armiliato en la pelicula de Woody Allen To Rome with love. 

7- Cuando tenía 17 años, mi mejor amiga y yo enterramos una capsula del tiempo en el parque de nuestra casa de campo. La desenterramos 6 años más tarde y fue muy emocionante. La foto doble nos muestra a nosotras dos con los contenidos de la cajita, que estaban secándose al sol porque no la habíamos sellado bien y le había entrado agua.

8- Tengo una memoria de elefante para cosas poco importantes, especialmente para las fechas. Puedo recordar con facilidad, por ejemplo, qué estaba haciendo el 7 de septiembre de 1992 (fui a una fiesta en casa de mi amiga Melina. Vieron? les dije)

9- Viví 2 1/2 años en Costa de Marfil y esos años cambiaron mi vida para siempre. En la tercera foto de este post me pueden ver en la región del Comoé, al lado de una planta de cacao.

10- Soy originalmente rubia, pero me tiño el pelo de marrón chocolate porque tengo canas 😉

11-Tengo un troll viajero, algo así como el enano de jardín de la película “Amélie”. Lo compré en enero de 1994 (les dije que era buena para las fechas)  y ha viajado conmigo alrededor del mundo. En la 4ta foto del post lo pueden ver arriba de una camioneta Toyota Prado de Naciones Unidas. Mi equipo de trabajo y yo estábamos desayunando en Bouaké (Costa de Marfil) cuando se me ocurrió tomarle la foto allí. Podría decirse que Naciones Unidas tuvo un troll casco azul por un segundos 😉

12- Aprendo idiomas con facilidad. Creo que ese es mi mayor talento.

13- Adoro la Opera y se me saltan las lágrimas cuando la escucho. Sí, ya sé que teniendo sangre italiana soy un verdadero cliché caminante, pero qué se le va a hacer…

14- Conocí a mi marido en Abijan, Costa de Marfil, el día que llegué al pais. Comenzamos a salir juntos una semana despues, y un mes después él me pidió casamiento y yo dije que sí. La 5ta foto del post es nuestra primer foto juntos.

15- Mi marido y yo nos casamos en Florencia, Italia (Firenze), 5 meses y medio despues de conocernos. Fue el día más feliz de mi vida. Me casé con un traje negro y un sombrero.

Ahora aqui estan mis respuestas a las preguntas de Amanda:

1- Si pudieras vivir en cualquier lugar ¿cual elegirias?

Hmm…esa es una pregunta dificil porque me gustaría vivir en muchos lugares y experimentar la vida en distintas culturas, pero teniendo que elegir sólo una ciudad, elegiría Florencia. Es mi ciudad preferida, dentro de las que conozco, claro.

2- Si pudieras elegir un poder mágico ¿ cual elegirias? 

El poder de sanación, no sólo del cuerpo físico, sino tambien el alma, la mente y el corazón. El poder de sanar relaciones rotas, llevar paz donde hay guerra, sonrisas donde hay lágrimas y esperanza a aquellos que la han perdido.

3- Si te encontraras con el genio de la lámpara ¿qué le pedirias?

El poder de la pregunta anterior. Y una cámara Canon 5D Mark III con un par de lentes 😉

4- Me recomendarías algun libro?

Sí, varios! Los primeros que se me ocurren son los siguientes:

– Cien años de soledad de Gabriel García Marquez

– Rayuela, de Julio Cortazar

– Todo lo que escribió Milan Kundera

– Cualquier libro de Krishnamurti

– La biografía de Nelson Mandela (en inglés se llama A long Walk to Freedom)

– Un niño con suerte (el libro del ex juez de la Corte Internacional de Justicia, Buergenthal sobre cómo sobrevivió a Auschwitz)

– Los libros de Ahmadou Kpurouma acerca del conflicto en Costa de Marfil: Allah no está obligado, cuando nos negamos decimos que no, y los soles de las  independencias.

– A puertas  cerradas, de Jean Paul Sartre (tuve un período existencialista cuando tenía 14 años, en que me vestía toda de negro, leía a Sartre, Camus, y de Beauvoir y decia cosas que sonaban importantes. Ah, la adolescencia…)

5- ¿Qué te llevó a empezar un blog?

Las ganas de contarles a mi familia y amigos las cosas que estaba aprendiendo. Con el tiempo, y para mi grata sorpresa, otra gente fue leyendome y ahora ya somos una comunidad. Gracias por estar allí!

6- ¿Qué te hace feliz ahora? 

Muchas cosas, pequeñas cosas: la risa de mis hijos, el abrazo de mi marido, los días soleados detrás de mi ventana, una taza de rico té, las gerberas amarillas que compré ayer en el mercado y que adornan mi living, música bonita, amigos nuevos, proyectos nuevos, nuevos comienzos. Creo fervientemente que la felicidad está en las pequeñas cosas.

7- ¿Cual es tu comida favorita?

No sé si tengo una comida favorita, me gusta comer cosas diferentes en diferentes momentos, pero mi sangre italiana dicta que siempre es buen momento para comer pasta!

8- ¿Cuento de hadas preferido?

La Bella y la Bestia

9- ¿Eres nomado o te consideras atado a tus raices?

Nómade, definitivamente

10-¿El mejor lugar que hayas visitado?

A qué te refieres con mejor lugar? Mi ciudad favorita es Florencia, porque respira arte y es perfecta 🙂

10- ¿Recuerdo de infancia más feliz?

No recuerdo…posiblemente el día que nació mi hermano porque estaba super contenta de tener un hermanito!
